Make-Up wipes are horrific for your skin, and the environment. They’re a waste of money and can cause health issues that lead you to waste more money.

1. Destroys Skin Health

Make-up wipes have to contain a high concentration of harsh preservatives. These strong preservatives destroy the skin Acid Mantle, which is a fine, slightly acidic, protective barrier that keeps bad stuff (such as bacteria) out and keeps good things (such as moisture created by natural oils) in the skin. Hence, make-up wipes severely dry out a person’s skin increasing skin aging, wrinkle formation, redness, and causes flaky skin. Some of these effects are immediate, but most side effects develop over time (a few weeks to months). Since the Acid Mantle is destroyed, the skin is open to infection by bacteria, fungi (which can cause fungal acne), and other topical contaminants. The more often you use make-up wipes, the more your acid mantle is destroyed and you can find yourself developing skin conditions such as acne, rashes, and eczema on your face.

What’s worse is that the good ingredients in make-up wipes help these harsh chemicals penetrate deeper into your skin, making their negative impact worse. These harsh chemicals can stay on your skin after using that convenient makeup wipe, ruining skin pH and chemically removing your much-needed Acid Mantle.

Bad Skin

Why do Make-up wipes contain such Harsh Chemicals?

The simple answer, they have to. Moist makeup wipes, with their plastic tissue surface, are an excellent breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. Without these harsh preservatives such as phenoxyethanol, makeup wipes would have an extremely short shelf-life, they wouldn’t be worth selling or buying; you’d open a nasty stinky bag full of bacterial colonize and fungi.

Harsh Preservatives

Side Note: There are often multiple preservatives, at least two, in makeup wipes. These preservatives are in higher concentrations than they would be in other cosmetic products, such as cream and foundation. At low concentrations, these preservatives can be helpful, but because they need to be at higher concentrations, they’re harmful (especially for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers). Too much of a good thing is always bad.

2. Aren’t made to be Cleansers or Exfoliants

Cleansers remove make-up, dead skin cells, oil, and dirt; keeping pores clear. Exfoliants remove dead skin cells; which helps keep skin looking young and treat skin conditions such as acne.
Makeup wipes are a convenient quick method for fixing or changing makeup On the Go. They’re not supposed to be part of your daily skincare routine. Occasional use is ideal, but daily use will cause developmental skin conditions as mentioned earlier. Make-up wipes only remove some make-up; mainly they move makeup, dirt, and oil around your face. Make-up wipes help clog pores leading to breakouts and acne.

Those of you using make-up wipes in your daily routine to remove makeup and dirt from your face, Please Stop! Instead buy real cleansers and exfoliants, such as micellar cleansing water (that are not fragranced) and chemical exfoliants, or scrubs. The main ingredients you want in these products are: Glycerin, Salicylic acid, Retinol, Lactic acid, Glycolic acid, and Mandelic acid.
Try your best to get fragrance-free skincare products always, I know it’s much easier said than found.

3.Reduces the Effectiveness of Skincare Products

Since make-up wipes don’t remove the majority of makeup and dirt on your face, this means that any skincare products you use after a makeup wipe won’t be effective. You’re putting another layer over a layer of grime on your face, which does nothing for your skin. Skincare products need to penetrate the skin and enter the micropores of your skin to do their job. Dirt and make-up stop skincare products from doing this, meaning whatever you intend that skincare product to do won’t be done. You’re wasting your money on skincare products by not properly cleaning and exfoliating your face.

4. Destroys the Environment

Make-Up wipes are a single-use product made of non-biodegradable materials such as polyester, and polypropylene. Flushed Make-up wipes, wet wipes, and more contributed to the “Fatberg” London sewage Monster on 12th September 2017, a concrete solid blockage in London’s sewer system that was about 130 tons, the same weight as 11 double-decker buses, which is almost the same weight as a blue whale. Make-up wipes in landfills also don’t do us any favours, poisoning soil, nearby water sources, and the air. The daily use of makeup wipes by billions of people is causing these nonbiodegradable products to accumulate on land and in the oceans, killing terrestrial and ocean wildlife. All this contributes to land degradation which will eventually result in the next major pandemic, the food pandemic.

Makeup Wipe Pollution

What to do instead:

Double cleanse. Do not triple cleanse, remember too much of a good thing is bad. Use a water-based and an oil-based cleanser. These cleansers can be applied using your hands, or 100% biodegradable tissues and 100% cotton items (that are made of plant-based cotton). This way you get rid of water-soluble and water-insoluble dirt and makeup. This will unclog your pores, help skincare products you put on after cleansing be optimally effective, keep skin looking younger and radiant. Best of all it will help treat current skin conditions and help prevent possible developmental skin conditions.
